Examiner review: “The Leper Window is a subtle work of horror”

Looks like my new horror novella The Leper Window passed the exam over at Examiner.com:

“The novella has a very strong sense of location as well as an almost palpable sense of doom that engulfs the story and gives it the feel of an older horror work by writers such as H.P Lovecraft or M.R. James. For fans of classic horror, ‘The Leper Window’ is sure to be a treat and a break from the norm in the current horror genre.”

The Leper Window is released October 6th.

‘Demons, chills and superb writing’ The Leper Window: early reviews & pre-orders

The Leper Window, my new occult novella, is released Oct 6th by Samhain Horror.

Just in time for Halloween.

The Leper Window is the 2nd in the Daniel Gates Adventures series (which began with The Lucifer Glass) and will transport you to the haunted wilds of North Wales – and beyond into a realm of demons and ancient curses.

If you like that sort of thing then you can pre-order the book today for less than the price of a cup of coffee.

About the book:

Do not gaze into its secrets.

Daniel Gates’s last assignment involving a rare demonic book left him plagued by hideous nightmares, which are about to get even worse. When a page is stolen from Choronzon’s Grimoire, Daniel is sent to the wilds of North Wales to retrieve it for his mysterious client. But the stolen page contains dark, occult secrets, and he finds to his peril that he is not the only one desperate to find it. Daniel’s journey takes him to the very brink of madness and to the demons that await—beyond the Leper Window.

Early praise for The Leper Window:

“Demons, chills, and superb writing.”
(Cat After Dark Book Reviews)

‘The Leper Window is an interesting and creepy work…it packs an eerie punch’
(The Novel Pursuit)

And here’s what The Horror Bookshelf had to say about the Daniel Gates Adventures:

“Lee is a supreme talent when it comes to building a sense of atmosphere and that is evident not only in The Lucifer Glass, but his other works as well.…Lee has at least another two books planned in the Daniel Gates universe, but I hope the stories continue well beyond that!”
(The Horror Bookshelf)

RIP Wes Craven, sweet dreams and thank you for all the nightmares

Wes Craven A Nightmare On Elm Street

a genre giant – on the set of Nightmare On Elm Street (photo source: WesCraven.com)

Horror fans are mourning the loss of a Master of Horror. Wes Craven was a true innovator in the genre who had a knack for taking transgression and giving it mainstream popularity. From his early video nasties through to the live burial scene in The Serpent and the Rainbow (arachnophobes beware!) and the crowd-pleasing jump scares of the Scream series, Uncle Wes knew what scared us. I remember having bruises up my arm for a week after taking the prettiest girl at high school on a date to see A Nightmare on Elm Street – and I hardly slept a wink that night after seeing a red and green car on the walk home (for real – what are the chances). Wes Craven’s filmography is an impressive legacy and he will be sorely missed.

Here is Wes Craven talking about being a filmmaker, about finding something deeper, and about the geek inheriting the Earth in one of my favourite segments from the brilliant Nightmare Series Encyclopedia (1999). It is bittersweet to hear him speak about how he’d like to be remembered.

And remember him we will.

Rest in Peace Wes Craven, sweet dreams – and thank you for all the nightmares.

More praise for The Skintaker:

“A grandly entertaining period horror adventure in the classical Kipling and Conrad tradition…THE SKINTAKER has never a dull moment.  I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
(Eric Red, screenwriter of NEAR DARK, THE HITCHER and author of IT WAITS BELOW and WHITE KNUCKLE)

“Fans of extreme horror will find it all very satisfying, as author Frazer Lee paints his narrative so vividly.”
(5 out of 5 stars, Mallory Heart Reviews)

“I loved this book! Filled with fabulous descriptions and fully formed characters I devoured The Skintaker in one sitting…I didn’t want the adventure to end. This was my first novel by Frazer Lee but it definitely won’t be my last. If you’re looking for a great read, grab this 5 star book and hold on for the ride.”

“An engaging and innovative slab of pagan horror.”

In Memoriam: Sir Christopher Lee

IMG_2320

When I was ten years old I used to pretend Christopher Lee was my dad (still do sometimes – between you and me). Staying up to watch him play Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster and The Mummy in Hammer double bills on telly made quite an impression on me. (and look how well I turned out….)

I’ll never forget meeting Mr Lee years later at a signing – he made a point of standing up because i was with a young lady. What a gentleman (this lovely piece at Brutal As Hell says it all really) and what a phenomenally talented performer. Whether he was playing a Bond villain, the scourge of the Musketeers, a Sith Lord, Dark Wizard, or his inimitable Lord Summerisle – Sir Christopher always gave it his all. He gave so much in his 93 years and the world shall never see his like again.

I close my eyes and hear his voice and to me he is forever The Count.

Rest in Peace, Sir Christopher of Lee x

The Leper Window: Cover art & release date revealed

The Leper Window is the latest in my ‘Daniel Gates’ novella series, which began with the critically acclaimed The Lucifer Glass (click here to read some rave reviews) from Samhain Horror.

I’m super thrilled today to share the cover art with you (below – again by artist Scott Carpenter) and to announce the release date of October 6th 2015 – just in time for Halloween!

Keep an eye on this blog and my social media for pre-order links, extracts and contests in the run up to release.

Of course October is a little way off, but Samhain is never far away so in the meantime why not catch up with my other titles at the Samhain Store.

I hope you’re enjoying this character and series. Daniel Gates will return in novella number three in the series in 2016.

I survived the Hell-e-vator at World Horror Con Atlanta! #WHC2015

Bram Stoker Awards® Weekend & World Horror Con 2015 was a total blast.

I met so many wonderful people, participated in and attended brilliant panels, signed a coffin load of books, and presented the World Premiere of my new movie The Stay. My first Stoker Awards Banquet was an unforgettable night, and I had the pleasure of sitting at the Samhain Horror table with several of my labelmates. I even sipped single malt whisky and chatted with the legendary Jack Ketchum with my partner in crime Aaron Dries. The after-parties went on into the wee hours of the morning and my suitcase was bursting with beautiful books as I flew the red eye back home to merry olde England.

See my WHC2015 photo gallery here.

But one thing I didn’t know about WHC2015 was that it had its own scary theme park ride, courtesy of the Marquis Marriott Atlanta.

The Hell-e-vator.

Check out my clip below – a madcap descent into the vertiginous abyss straight down from the 30th floor into a watery, pebble-based demise. Now imagine doing that with a hangover. We’re on an express elevator to hell – goin’ down! Hold on to yer lungpipes!
